☆ John Bruton Dies at 76; Negotiated for Peace as Irish Prime Minister

John Bruton, a former Irish prime minister who led an alliance known as the Rainbow Coalition and played a central role with Britain in an effort to secure peace in Northern Ireland after decades of strife, died on Tuesday in Dublin. His family said his death, in a hospital, followed a long illness; they did not specify the cause. Feted in death across the political spectrum in Britain and Ireland, Mr. Bruton had a long career in the center-right Fine Gael party. He was his country’s prime minister, or Taoiseach (pronounced TEE-shack) in Irish, from 1994 to 1997, a time when Britain was led by Prime Minister John Major of the Conservative Party. The governments in Dublin and London had long acknowledged that they each played a major role in navigating the treacherous sectarian and political divisions of warring Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland.

London CNN —It opened just over a year ago, but a luxurious 24-key Italian property has already been named the best hotel in the world. Passalacqua, which overlooks Lake Como, beat off stiff competition to receive the top spot on the first-ever edition of the World’s 50 Best Hotels list, which was announced at an awards ceremony in the UK on Tuesday night. The highly-anticipated list honored 50 hotels from 35 destinations across the world. “After seeing the devastating impact of Covid-19 on the hospitality industry, it’s been especially fulfilling to see so many hoteliers from around the world gather in London to celebrate each other’s achievements under one roof for the first-ever awards ceremony of The World’s 50 Best Hotels,” Tim Brooke-Webb, managing director for the World’s 50 Best Hotels, said in a statement. Investors should keep an eye on biotech company BeiGene as it scales up its global revenue streams, according to Jefferies. Analyst Kelly Shi initiated coverage of the stock with a buy rating and assigned a price target of $287, suggesting shares stand to gain 49.2% in the next 12 months. The stock has lost 12% so far this year but has had a more uplifting quarter with gains of about 8%. According to the analyst, BeiGene's product pipeline could expand beyond oncology, as it currently includes early autoimmune candidates. BeiGene's tislelizumab drug is another major growth driver for the company, Shi said, highlighting the drug's position as China's top-selling PD-1 drug with about 40% market share.

Shares of the company's stock were up more than 5% in trading Thursday on the back of Choi's call. The analyst also sees promise in the company's pipeline of Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitor drugs, currently in the works to treat a slew of conditions including some forms of lymphoma and potentially multiple sclerosis. Snowden said in 2019 that he was willing to return to the U.S. if he’s guaranteed a fair trial. In fact, in 2016, The Washington Post’s own editorial board opposed granting the whistleblower a pardon. He is one of 75 foreign nationals listed by the decree as being granted Russian citizenship.
